IndyGo riders could face fare change
Voters have previously said they wanted the IndyGo system to increase its services, and now the transportation service is considering changing their fares to meet the increase. The changes could take effect this spring.
Lauren Day, IndyGo's public relations director, said $1.75 will remain as the basic far, but fare capping will be introduced. The fare cap would be $4 per day, and $15.75 per week. Three trips per day with the remainder free, and unlimited transfer for two hours would be included in the daily cap. Nine trips per week with the remainder free, and unlimited transfers of two hours would be included in the weekly cap.
Day also said the changes mean each route would run every day, service would start earlier and run more frequently. Plus, the entire system will make it simpler for riders to make transfers. Officials making changes like this can use brochure printing to help riders understand new policies.
There will be changes too in the way riders buy tickets. The system will now allow riders to pay with their cell phones, purchase tickets at a vending machine, and use reloadable cards they can buy online, at the vending machines, at the Transit Center, or via phone. Passes for 31 days, ten trips, or one week are being phased out.
Members of the public are invited to let IndyGo know what they think by filling out a survey. A vote about the changes will be taken February 28.
