Indianapolis to offer tours of historic German building
In August, The Athenaeum Foundation and Indiana Landmarks will offer guided tours of Indianapolis’ historic landmark building The Athenaeum.
Built in 1898, The Athenaeum is an impressive example of German Renaissance Revival architecture, called Das Deutsche Haus in German. Designed by well-known author Kurt Vonnegut’s grandfather’s architecture firm, the Athenaeum was originally conceived and utilized as a German clubhouse and health gymnasium. Currently, the building is a national historic landmark and serves as a hub of modern urban life in the city, containing a YMCA, theater, and restaurant that has been in operation since its earliest days.
Those interested in learning more about The Athenaeum will be able to take advantage of a one-hour guided tour that will occur on one date in August. Tourgoers will learn about the German revival architectural features, discover how the building was saved and restored, and see spaces usually inaccessible to the public, such as the theater stage and rooms overlooking the gym.
Events involving guided tour elements often include informational materials such as brochures, which local brochure printing shops can help organizers to print.
The tours are scheduled for August 14 during two timeslots - one from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm and the other from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Athenaeum is located at 401 East Michigan Street, Indianapolis. Tickets range from $5 to $10.
