Indianapolis Rolls-Royce factories handed million dollar contracts

Rolls-Royce engine plants in the Indianapolis area have landed three contracts, worth a total of $442m.

This will keep the production lines running as the factories turn out specialized parts to be installed on the F-35B fighter, with Rolls-Royce being a manufacturer of aircraft engines as well as automobiles.

The high-profile project consists of building the LiftSystems, which are powerful fans that allow the F-35B to land, take off, and hover in a similar way to a helicopter. Rolls-Royce recently shipped out the 50th LiftSystem. Pratt & Whitney makes the main engine for the F-35B, and thus had to approve the contracts with the Indianapolis factories.

The F-35B has been designed to replace aircraft used by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Marine Corps, as well as forces in other sovereign nations. Since the requirements are different for each of the services, the LiftSystems are not installed on all of the aircraft. The Marine Corps is the service most likely to want the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) version that uses the LiftSystem. The F-35B will replace the Marine Corps' Harriers.

Rolls-Royce could work with a banner printing company to create a colorful piece to display on the days the company reaches milestones, such as shipping its 100th fan. Displays like this can help build employee morale.
