Indianapolis proposes changes to parking meter fees

Indianapolis officials have proposed extending the hours parking meters will collect fees in the evenings, and also suggested fees be collected on Sundays.

The proposal was sponsored by the Indianapolis City-County Council's president and vice president, Vop Osili and Zach Adamson, who recently brought it before the full council. If approved, the measure would end the Zone system that is currently in use, and extend the hours that people would have to pay to park at a meter.

At present, parking meters in downtown Indianapolis are located in various ‘meter zones’, where people may stop paying at different times. Some zones stop collecting fees at 6:00 pm, while others are still in operation until 9:00 pm. The system depends on the day, and the zone.

The new proposal would standardize the parking throughout the downtown, with meters collecting fees from 7:00 am until 9:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays; and from 7:00 am until 11:00 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Parking fees would also be charged on Sundays, from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Officials proposing measures like this might use poster printing to create signs making the changes clear.

There was no word on whether fees would be imposed on holidays. Currently, parking is free on New Year's Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Presidents' Day, and Dr. Martin Luther King Day.
