Indianapolis prepares to go batty
The Eighth Annual Indiana Bat Festival is coming to the city of Indianapolis this weekend. The event will take place outside Terre Haute, where Indiana State University has always previously hosted it, for the first time in its history.
This year, the bats will take over the belfry at the Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus.
Pamela Martin, the director of the Center for Earth and Environmental Sciences at IUPUI, says the event will allow participants to take a closer look at bats, at the various ecosystems in which they can be found, and their vital importance to the health of the environment. The festival, though concentrating on the bats, also examines the role of the flying mammals in keeping pests under control.
Taking place in the lecture hall, the event will feature interactive activities suitable for children, talks on bat habitats and biology, and demonstrations featuring live bats. There will also be an inflatable cave available for attendees to explore. The festival is sponsored by the IUPUI center itself, as well as other university departments.
The festival will be held at IUPUI tomorrow, September 13, from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. A banner printing company may come in useful if organizers wish to create a bat-shaped banner to hang, possibly upside down, above the door to the exhibits and lecture hall.
