Indianapolis on its bike for fundraiser
The Baxter YMCA in Indianapolis is hosting a fundraiser to help raise money for a program for cancer survivors.
The Y hopes to raise a total of $5,000, which will be used to help send 10 survivors of the disease to a 12-week-long training program.
Rather than a marathon or a walkathon, this fundraiser is a cycle-a-thon, during which participants will ride their bikes to raise money to support the LIVESTRONG program at the YMCA.
The program is designed for adult survivors of cancer who are in the transition between finishing up their cancer treatment, and beginning to feel emotionally and physically strong enough to return to their regular lives. The program is 12 weeks long, and is conducted in small groups. It is held at the YMCA rather than at a hospital in order to emphasize that the program is not about disease, but about health.
The program helps survivors regain muscle strength and mass, increase endurance and flexibility, and improve functional ability, self-esteem, and energy levels. Program participants also receive help in developing fitness programs of their own to help them live a healthier lifestyle
Organizers of walking and cycling events often create banners to mark the start and finish lines of the ride, and to celebrate the event.
The cycle-a-thon takes place February 10, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the southside YMCA in Indianapolis, at 7900 South Shelby Street.
