Indianapolis joins other cities to explore transport ideas

Transportation for America, a policy organization based in Washington, D.C., has chosen Indianapolis to join 21 other large cities to discuss practices in dealing with transportation issues, with special emphasis on curb space and the use of the right-of-way.

The program, which is known as the Smart Cities Collaborative, aims to create goals specific to each city, and then developing policies relating to developing infrastructure addressing these issues over the long term.

Joe Hogsett, the mayor of Indianapolis, said work with Transportation for America will help Indianapolis with its efforts to make the community more accessible to all. He added he believes working with leaders and experts from other cities will allow Indianapolis to find solutions that will benefit everyone.

Indianapolis will take advantage of the Smart Cities Collaborative by putting resources and time toward developing “mobility hubs.” These will bring a number of transportation options, including vehicle sharing, bike parking, bike sharing stations, and bus lines, into centralized locations in densely populated, walkable parts of the city. Officials added they will work with IndyGo to get the most from the already-existing infrastructure, as well as building an effective transit system that covers the entire city. The first meeting of the cities in the collaborative will take place on April 16 and 17 in Denver.

Projects like these are exciting but complex, so officials might work with a flyer printing company to create a letter for residents, explaining the plans.
