Indianapolis group to celebrate living legend

An upcoming concert will celebrate the talent of one of today's most celebrated composers.

The Indianapolis Arts Chorale is presenting “Sondheim in the Spring,” a celebration of the works of the prolific American composer Stephen Sondheim. The concert takes place on the weekend Sondheim will turn 90. The chorale singers will be on stage with several of Summer Stock Stage's young musicians, who will help explore Sondheim compositions.

The Chorale was founded in 1972 by Elise Marshall, and is joined by audition. There are more than 40 members in the group, which performs a subscription series each year of three concerts, and makes other appearances in and around Indianapolis.

Their salute to Sondheim acknowledges the work of one of today's most important composers. Sondheim's best-known musicals include “A Little Night Music,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Often tackling dark or disturbing material through his work, he has also won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, eight Tonys and Grammys, the Laurence Olivier Award, a Pulitzer Prize, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a special Tony for Lifetime Achievement.

The Sondheim in the Spring concert will take place March 21, from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, at the United Methodist Church on Meridian Street. Brochure printing can be used to create programs for such events.
