What's Happening in Indianapolis, IN…

HorrorHound draws thousands of attendees

HorrorHound, a convention for horror lovers, came to Indianapolis for three days earlier this month, and took over the Indianapolis Marriott East.

An outgrowth of the eponymous magazine, HorrorHound was first held in 2007, two years after the magazine published its first issue.

Jeremy Sheldon, CEO of the magazine, believed there were many horror fans in the Midwest, but he was surprised by the response to the September 9th to 11th event.

HorrorHound is held twice a year, with one convention in Indianapolis and the other in Cincinnati. Indianapolis’s event draws between 4,000 and 6,000 fans, while Cincinnati’s convention is even larger, bringing as many as 8,000 to 10,000 people out to celebrate their love of all things horror.

Sheldon thinks the popularity of the conventions is due to the fact that horror fans love the genre, and tend to remain true to it. He believes the attraction comes from watching or reading about those who overcome the obstacles they face.

The hotel is relatively small, so many attendees have to park on neighboring streets, where residents are treated to sightings of mermaids, zombies, and other out-of-the-ordinary creatures. However, Sheldon says he has no desire to move to a larger venue, saying the free parking is a big draw because keeping costs low is important.

Events such as these can benefit if organizers work with flyer printing companies to create informational materials for mailings.
