Band with a twist comes to Indianapolis
A jam band that puts a special prog rock spin on the usual format is on the way to Indianapolis.
Umphrey's McGee (UM) have developed their own unique “improg” sound, a result of combining the elements of progressive rock with improvisation. Based in Chicago, UM was formed in 1997 by several students from Notre Dame. At first, they performed covers of songs by their idols like the Grateful Dead and Phish, who were pioneers of the jam genre, in which extended improvisational intervals known as jams were played over patterns of chords and rhythms.
UM began experimenting with improvisation in 2001, and came up with a method of their own, a technique they called the “Jimmy Stewart,” which was the name of the venue where they developed the style. They toured in 2002 to support their “Local Band Does OK” album, and were beginning to hit the charts by the late 00s. “Similar Skin” went to No. 49 on the Billboard chart.
A review of Umphrey's McGee in concert raves:
Umphrey's McGee will be at the Amphitheater at White River State Park on August 29 at 6:30 pm. Flyer printing is an effective means to use in promoting events like this.

"UM truly are the rightful heirs to the improg throne once occupied by The Dead, Phish etc., The diversity and range of this band is beyond belief. If you are considering going to a UM show - don't hesitate further - just get some tickets and get there."
