Smartphone users will soon be able to pay for their parking quickly and easily when they visit Boise to go shopping or for other business.
The city’s parking officials plan on purchasing and installing nearly 800 smart parking meters that will accept payment via credit cards, coins or a smartphone app. The total cost for them will be approximately $310,000.
The exact date for their installation has not yet been announced, though it is expected that it will take place sometime in October. A company that provides printing services will be able to create Posters, Flyers, Postcards and other materials that will let the public know more about the new system and how it works.
The technology that will make this new system possible will include sensors that can tell when a vehicle enters and leaves the parking space, and it will charge the user from when they park and then reset the space when they have gone so it will be ready for the next user.
A few of these new meters have already been installed in the downtown area. The city’s administrative services manager remarked that it would be ideal if there was one application that could cover all areas of transportation, including parking in public garages, street parking, renting a bike or paying the fare to ride the bus.
