Town Center goes full circle with new road plans

A shopping mall just five miles outside of Marietta is to be the site for Cobb County’s first two-lane roundabout, it was confirmed this month.

The $4.5m project is designed to alleviate congestion around the Town Center mall, particularly on Barrett Parkway. As well as the addition of a roundabout, a realignment of several roads connecting to the mall is planned so that traffic can flow more freely.

On November 11, the Cobb Department of Transportation (DOT) put on a public meeting to allow residents to review and field their questions, comments, or concerns to officials, although there was no formal presentation, according to the Cobb County website.

Cobb’s deputy transportation director, Jim Wilgus, has explained that the county’s SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) fund, set up in 2011, will pay for part of the project. The Town Center Community Improvement District is ploughing $1.5m into it too, according to its communications director Mary Lou Stephens.

With new road structures often taking motorists by surprise, those involved in the planning of projects like these usually do their utmost to keep locals informed, often using the assistance of brochure printers to connect with people living and working in the area.

According to Wilgus, roundabout construction is set to get underway in October 2015, and the project should be complete by the following March.
