Thousands celebrate Juneteenth in Marietta

Crowds of people descended on Marietta Square on Saturday, June 14th to mark the annual Juneteenth celebration in fine style.

With banner printing festooned all over the square, the 11th running of the Cobb County event attracted over 100 vendors offering things to buy and great food and drink to keep people fuelled for the celebration.

It was a great success, with the president of the Cobb chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Deane Bonner, saying:

“It’s good weather, good food, good energy […] It’s a phenomenal day.”

Though lots of fun for all the family, the Juneteenth celebration has a serious side, marking the day back in 1865 when Union soldiers moved into Texas. That became the start of the Texan slaves being liberated in the state.

The event attracted vendors from all over, with Print companies ensuring their Stationery and sale Signs and Banners were easily noticeable. Taking 11 weeks to put together, Bonner thanked everyone involved, saying:

“This was a true joint effort.

“We’re happy with our partnership with the City of Marietta.”

Usually taking place on June 19th, the year's Juneteenth was held a weekend early. Running Friday through Sunday, the NAACP had estimated that somewhere in the region of 55,000 turned out over the first two days, with another 40,000 predicted for Sunday.
