Theater buffs can enjoy a treat, because the ‘Damn Yankees’ have come to town.
The musical has just opened, and will run in Marietta. The popular show is set in the 1950s, when the New York Yankees baseball team seemed unbeatable, winning pennant after pennant. Featuring music by Richard Adler and lyrics by Jerry Ross, it has a script by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, based on Wallop’s book ‘The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant’. The original production ran on Broadway for 1,091 performances and won seven Tonys.
The show is full of familiar songs such as ‘Heart’ and ‘Whatever Lola Wants’, and tells the story of a diehard Washington Senators fan named Joe Boyd (the team has long since moved and is now the Minnesota Twins) who literally sells his soul to the Devil to help the Senators beat their rivals. Hijinks ensue, the Devil loses, the Senators win, and everyone has a great time.
The production is suitable for everyone, and information is available on the theater’s website. It is likely that a banner printing company will create a festive banner announcing the show.
‘Damn Yankees’ runs through April 26 at Marietta’s Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. The show is staged by the Atlantic Lyric Theatre. Brandt Blocker, the Lyric’s managing artistic director, says the production is a great way to welcome the Atlanta Braves to Cobb County.
