Marietta high school gets new performing arts center and gym

Ongoing construction at Wheeler High School has given the institution the opportunity to make additional improvements to the campus.

The first phase of construction was the demolishing of the old greenhouse and construction of a new one. The cost of replacing the structure was approximately $400,000. The second phase of construction is now underway, and has price tag of about $1.9m in order to reconfigure the campus.

Among the improvements are a paved parking lot and a new wing for academic studies. The third phase, now under discussion, would add a new gym and center for the performing arts; it would also be the most expensive.

The proposed gymnasium will seat some 3,000 people and comprise approximately 100,000 square feet, while the proposed performance space will seat 750. In addition, the space will have a black-box theater, as well as a classroom for horticultural studies. Principal David Chiprany noted the current space seats only 350 people, and the sound and lighting systems are outdated.

Wheeler High, which is located in Marietta, has 2,200 students and opened its doors in 1965. At one time, the school had 38 trailers it used as classrooms, and teachers had to park off-campus.

School officials could work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, explaining the construction and asking for support.
