Marietta employees to be asked about improvement plans

City employees in Marietta are to be asked to assess the improvement outlines for the Square put out by Mayor Steve Tumlin.

The improvement plans, which were unanimously approved by a 6-0 margin, will ask staff to assess the feasibility of the plans.

The City Manager, Bill Bruton, will form a group with representatives from nearly every department in the council. The newly formed committee began discussing the plans last week.

The plans, which would see sidewalks widened, parking meters and bathrooms added, will be assessed according to their cost and timescale.

Tumlin said:

“I think, basically, we turn this over to the staff and say, ‘How feasible is this?’

“I would anticipate giving an update to the council within the next 90 days. It is too early to predict when a final report would be presented.”

The compiled report will be discussed by the council and, while there will be no obligation to act on its findings or the overarching plan, it is expected that a number of possibilities will be proffered.

The council has also approved plans to create a new tourism center in the Square. As well as presenting a new place for the council to plan its initiatives from, it will also allow Posters, Banners and any Stationery printing taking place to be stored in one easily accessible facility.
