Annual PAL program underway in Marietta

Marietta’s Police Athletic League (PAL) kicked off its 2015 season March 18 at the Lawrence Street Center.

There were 75 participants at the kickoff, and they had a change to take part in mini-training sessions for T-ball and basketball, with the help of the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Development Team, and the Atlanta Braves around Town team. Other demonstrations were given by the Cardio Kool Kids, who demonstrated dance and other activities designed to encourage cardio fitness. The programs change weekly and sessions run from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm weekdays.

The programs are popular with children, their parents, and community leaders as well, many of whom were at the center for the celebration. Charvella Rose, whose sons (eight-year-old Justin and ten-year-old Reggie) participate, said she likes the programs because it helps them develop live skills as well as staying active. Rose enjoys the fact that the program is community-sponsored, and takes place in a positive setting. She believes the activities help children develop confidence and leadership skills, while remaining grounded.

The PAL was formed in 2008 by the Marietta Police Department, which runs a number of after-school programs for children. Approximately 10 officers help with the various events, some of which are daily, while others are held weekly.

PAL officers might consider working with a banner printing company to create something to kids to each event.
