I-75/I-16 interstate construction in Macon finally pushing forwards

Segments of highways I-75 and I-16 that go through Macon, Georgia, that were under construction for over 15 months in response to negotiations from state government officials, as they have made progress in transforming the core interstate system.

According to Sen. David Lucas, the goal of this interchange project was to improve road conditions, but it was repeatedly delayed due to a lack of funding from the GDOT. The construction team estimates the cost of infrastructure to be roughly $211m for all three phases of the project.

In summary, the first three phases involve the following efforts: highway widening, paving commercial vehicle lanes, upgrading exit ramps, and so forth. They have made considerable improvements on the I-16 route near Coliseum Drive while smoothing one mile over I-75 from Hardeman Avenue.

Moreover, the bridge located between Spring St. and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is still being worked on: construction crews are repairing the walls and grading the Spring St. ramp. They also plan to demolish the Walnut Street bridge on I-75. Organizations like the GDOT can use printing services to put out construction bids if they need a few extra hands.

The interstate expansion of I-75 and I-16 will eventually lead to the implementation of a first-class transportation facility. This would reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for passing motorists and tractors.

Based on the GDOT’s timeline, the three phases of road construction should be finished at the end of 2021.
