Community asked to stand behind Melbourne fundraiser

Vets may face their biggest challenge after they have taken off their combat boots for the last time, and a Melbourne fundraiser will help to make sure they all have a place to call home.

The city will be raising money and awareness about the issue of homeless veterans during the annual Home Stretch 5k for Homeless Vets. Its starting line will be located in the Eau Gallie Square, and monies raised will benefit National Veterans Homeless Support (NVHS).

The organizers have kept Covid in mind when planning the day, and both in-person and virtual joining opportunities are on offer. Race packets will be available for pickup on the day of the run, and to help make the occasion a community building event, there will be a variety of activities set up at the staging area. Awards will be presented to the top finishers.

The beneficiary of the fundraiser explained that the monies raised will be used to support transitional housing, and also to find homeless vets and connect them with community supports. A brochure printing company will be able to craft leaflets and other material to hand out that provide hotline and online contacts, as well as details about how to access mental health help.

The Home Stretch 5k for Homeless Vets will hit the ground running on November 7. Its Facebook listing offers additional details as well as a link to sign up.
