Miami-Dade County expands bus fleet in Hialeah and beyond

Nearly four dozen buses have been added to Miami-Dade County's busiest routes to serve people in Hialeah and other local areas.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the buses was held November 9, when the buses were formally introduced to the local transit system by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and members of the Board of County Commissioners.

The new 60-foot accordion buses are diesel-electric hybrids. Each one can hold up to 100 passengers at a time and comes fully equipped with Wi-Fi service. Typical 40-foot buses can hold up to 60 passengers.

Speaking at the ribbon-cutting, which took place in front of Commission Chambers, Mayor Gimenez said:

“The addition of these new hybrid articulated buses is one of many steps we are taking forward in improving and enhancing mobility throughout our county.”

From the fleet, 24 of the buses were already in use prior to the ribbon-cutting. The county paid about $980,000 per bus and has the budget to purchase a total of 64 of the energy-efficient vehicles.
