Adults in Miami-Dade County looking to get the leg up when it comes to running a small business may find themselves literally going back to school, because the county’s district school board is hosting a number of seminars and networking events under the aegis of OEO – the Office of Economic Opportunity.
These events, held in administrative buildings, secondary and even elementary schools, advertise themselves as offering crucial advice and opportunities for Floridian entrepreneurs.
New business owners can often be overwhelmed, having to become experts in everything from tax law to Logo Design. Connecting to people in the same circumstances, as well as potential clients and business partners, is therefore valuable. Over the past few months, OEO has held numerous events seeking to connect area small business owners with each other as well as the school district itself. These events often have a theme promising something to eat, with names such as ‘Lunch and Learn’ or ‘Doughnuts and Dialogue’.
Later this month, they will hold ‘Community Connection’ events focusing on individual districts of the county. The District 1 meeting will be held in Miami Gardens, while District 2’s event will take place at Lorah Park Elementary School. Entrepreneurs from surrounding areas such as Hialeah and Key Biscane may also be interested, and Business Cards are a must.
At these meetings, entrepreneurs will learn how to get their business into OEO’s database of certified vendors, as well as how to take advantage of special opportunities available to businesses owned by women, minorities and veterans. Miami-Dade County School District has said it is “ready to do business”, and supplying the fourth-largest school district in America is a huge opportunity.
