Hospital uses May to teach the signs of stroke

‘Be Stroke Smart’ is taking place at Hialeah Hospital in a few weeks and, with May being National Stroke Month, it will be a timely event presented by the American Heart Association.

Stroke Month was proclaimed to help raise public awareness about strokes and how to prevent them. Communities throughout the country hold public events during the month.

The Hialeah event will feature free screenings for cholesterol, glucose levels, blood pressure, BMI, and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Community organizations are expected to be on hand to distribute information about support and health services available. EMS providers will also be there to provide some background into what they do and what they have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. In addition, dieticians will be available for short consultations during the day.

The hospital actually provides free screenings, available here to seniors on the third Wednesday of every month. Those interested just need to register in advance.

Organizations that will be at the Hialeah event to provide information will likely give visitors printed materials that they can take home for their later reference. Local Print companies are frequently approached to help provide these types of services.

Be Stroke Smart will be held at Hialeah Hospital on May 21, beginning at 8:00 am. For more information call 1-800-470-7822.
