Hialeah library hosts literacy event

Hundreds of families went to the John F. Kennedy Library in Hialeah on September 26 to hear Spanish authors read from their own works, while children read poems they had written, or played in a bounce house, or got their faces painted.

The literacy fair has been held here since 2003. In addition to listening to authors of all ages, there was a Fantasy Theater event. During the show, magicians chose children from among the audience to help with the performance. They did tricks with props, many of which were tied in with reading, like a gigantic magic pencil that characters in a beloved children's book use. The magicians were also assisted by police officers from the Hialeah PD. The message conveyed to families and children was clear: reading is fun, and it is free to check out Books.

Children were not the only ones having fun and learning; there were adult workshops available as well, tackling such subjects as positive parenting and health awareness.

Hialeah's literacy director, Meghan Martinez, said the library acts as a central location where people can access all the resources they need.

The library staff could build on the event's popularity by working with a postcard printing company to create a Mailing card that describes this year's fun, and reminds recipients to plan to attend the event next year.
