As with others who work in the industry, farmers play an important role in helping to ensure food safety through proper handling, storage and other techniques. During an upcoming workshop, these will be taught in accordance with guidelines set by the Food Safety Modernization Act ( FSMA), and it will be offered in Greeley.
The class will focus on food safety from a farming point of view. It will include a review of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and learners will leave with a better understanding of how they can develop their own plan to ensure food is handled safely.
The syllabus for the day includes several components, and these range from a discussion of the FSMA rules, which recently came into effect to how to create a farm food safety plan. Along with this, the students will find out about the pathogenic microorganisms that can be found on a farm and how to avoid contamination of produce and other food products.
The registration fee for the session is $50, and the group will be treated to a light lunch. All the materials needed will be supplied, and at the end of the day, each participant that completed the training will receive a certificate. A company that prepares Letterheads can be called upon to supply these sorts of items.
Area farmers who would like to gain information they can use to keep their portion of the food handling system safe is welcome to take this training, and it will be offered on April 9th. It will be held at 525 N. 15th Avenue in Greeley.
