It is Coastal Cleanup Month in Torrance, with a special morning activity planned this weekend.
This event is held in coordination with the Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors, the California Coastal Commission, Heal the Bay, and the Ocean Conservancy. This year, the event will span the entire month of September to celebrate the state’s coastlines and watersheds. Such events are often promoted throughout a city with poster printing placed at key locations to attract participants.
The city will host three community clean-up sites of a hybrid nature throughout the month. These will be held at Sur La Break Park on Cabrillo Avenue; in downtown Torrance at Centennial Plaza in El Prado Park; and Miramar Park/Torrance Beach/at Paseo de la Playa in Redondo Beach. These efforts will be considered part of Coastal Cleanup Month.
The city is asking people to take photographs of themselves picking up trash on the beach, in a park, or in front of their homes, and post them on social media or send them to the city to be entered in a drawing for a prize.
There will also be an in-person one day event where volunteers in the community will participate in removing the plastic and trash at waterways and beaches, and anywhere else in the city. This will take place from 9:00 am to noon this Saturday, September 18.
