Torrance fire team has new man at the top

The Torrance Fire Department has appointed Fire Chief.

Fire Marshal Martin Serna was selected as the best candidate to fill the position, which was previously held by William Racowschi, who served with the department for 35 years before he retired.

Eight possible candidates were chosen from internal sources, and all were considered for the role. Chief Serna was selected, and he will lead a department with 163 employees that includes 145 firefighters that are employed at six fire stations.

He will also be responsible for administering an annual budget of $29m. A printer will be able to design and prepare everything from Business Cards to personalized Stationery that he will be able to put to good use in his new position.

With a career that began back in 1993 as an entry level first responder, Serna took on more and more responsibility, rising to engineer, then captain, battalion chief, and assistant chief. He has spent the past seven years of his career working as the fire marshal for the department. In this role, he was responsible for preparing budget estimates, department accounting and expenditure control.

City Manager Leroy Jackson remarked that Chief Serna has shown his ability to be a good leader and has extensive expertise in the field. He also noted that he feels he will be able to help the department move forward into the future.
