New rail line to come to Torrance

Planning is currently underway on the light-rail extension from Redondo Beach to Torrance.

Expected to cost $1bn, this project has been pushed and promoted by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments, as this area is lacking in opportunities for public transportation when compared to other parts of Los Angeles County. Consequently, commuters in the area have been forced to rely on the county’s freeways.

Community relations manager at the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Mark Dierking, believes that this rail line will provide some relief to the congestion in the South Bay area, as well as that which takes place on the 405 Freeway. Officials from Torrance said that the rail line could be a catalyst for economic development.

The proposed rail line will span 4.5 miles and run from the station at Marine Avenue in Redondo Beach to a new transit center at Crenshaw Boulevard at 208th Street in Torrance. There will be a connection to the existing station at Marine Avenue and will tie in with the Crenshaw/LAX Line so that travelers will have easy access to points north and east and Los Angeles International Airport. Print shops are often hired to create Flyers and other materials showing the proposed route of such rail lines, highlighting their benefits.

The goal is to compete the line in time for Summer 2028.
