Major discount grocer opens in Torrance

The first location of Aldi, a German discount grocer, is now opened in Torrance.

The group director of operations and logistics for the retail chain, Tom Cindel, expressed his excitement about opening the first location of its brand in Torrance. Aldi offers a broad selection of easy-to-prepare options and fresh foods and many of its products are under the private label brand of the company. The Torrance location spans 12,000 square feet and employs close to 20 people. Such stores often turn to local printing services to help with the creation of weekly Flyers and other materials to promote specials and unique items.

Founder of SupermarketGuru.com, Phil Lempert, said that as cost are expected to rise for the production of food, Aldi’s business strategy is to focus on efficiency. He said the company meets every quarter with vendors to determine how they the two can work together to reduce costs.

The company is looking to add 100 more store across the country this year, targeting the Northeast, Florida, Arizona, and California. The chain is also planning to expand its curbside pickup to 500 more stores which would make the number of stores offering curbside pickup over 1,200.

Aldi can be found in 37 states with over 2,000 stores. By the end of next year, it could become the third largest retailer of groceries by store count behind Kroger and Walmart.
