Electric truck company builds plant in Torrance

A manufacturing and distribution center is being opened in Torrance by Rivian.

The company is based in Irvine and makes electric vehicles, specializing in trucks. The company offers two models of trucks – the R1T and the R1S. Also offered is a model of commercial van, which features an all-wheel drive and is configurable from 450 to 700 cubic feet or cargo space.

Rivian will be leasing a building that spans 135,000 square feet on California Street. The building will be utilized by the company’s team for electric vehicle propulsion, which builds power-conversions and energy storage systems for the electric vehicles made by the company. There will be offices at the complex that will be used as laboratories for the development of hardware. Stationery printers are often called upon when such new plants and offices open to produce materials to reflect a new address for a company.

The site was purchased by State Point Capital for $34.5 million is June 2021, with plans to build a new industrial complex with additional office space. Western Alliance Bank awarded the firm $32.5 million in construction financing for the complex in December of last year.

Rivian has not yet delivered any significant number of vehicles. This year, the company is expecting to produce around 25,000 vehicles.

The property is currently under construction, with no firm date for the opening of the plant.
