The Warrior Cupboard is now opened to students at El Camino College in Torrance for food and toiletry items.
The previous Warrior Pantry has expanded to create the Cupboard which distributes toiletries and groceries twice a week as a drive-through service for those who face food insecurity. Parking Lot B on campus is opened where students present their identification after which they can pick up a pre-packaged bag containing nutritious food items. Flyer printing is often used for providing more information about the specific food, produce, and toiletry items offered.
Dena Maloney, president of the college, said that supporting the students and keeping them healthy is a priority for the college. In providing toiletries and food, Maloney added, that it is hoped some food anxiety can be alleviated.
The Warrior Pantry opened in October 2017 and offers supplementary food items to those students who have financial challenges in supporting themselves while also paying for college tuition. These items enable such students to have the proper nutrition so they can focus on their studies.
The Pantry is supported by donations from businesses in the area, the community, and college employees. and The Los Angeles County Supervisor and the Torrance Transit Department each awarded grants of $10,000 to the Pantry last year.
The Warrior Cupboard is opened on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
