A special election is being held in November to replace the Ward 4 Councilman who resigned back in March.
Six candidates are vying for the position. All of them, except for the Independent Bishop Oliver Gale, Jr., are from the Democratic Party. That may not count for much because Santa Ana’s democrats are known to ignore special elections, which generally experience low voter turnout anyway.
The candidates who have put their names on the ballots are:
- Phil Bacerra, who was the main competition for the Councilman who resigned,
- Brandon Sisco, who is a local real estate developer,
- Manuel Escamilla, who is a liberal democrat who used to work on the City of Santa Ana’s Planning Department,
- Jennifer Oliver, who was appointed as an Arts and Culture Commissioner by David Penaloza.
- Beatriz Mendoza, another liberal democrat who previously worked with Loretta Sanchez.
- Bishop Oliver Gale, Jr., the only non-democrat in this race and the leader of Greater Light Family Church.
Political campaigns often use printing services to help raise awareness about their bids for office so Santa Ana residents can expect to see many Flyers asking for their support over the coming months.
No Republican joined this race. The Democrats still don’t have complete dominance because they control 53% of the votes in the area, with the remaining 20% of voters choosing third-party candidates or declining to vote.
