Santa Ana residents face stiff penalties for wasting water

Santa Ana City Council has issued a decree that both businesses and residences will either reduce their water use by a specified amount or face the consequences.

A mandated water reduction of 12 percent was part of an intensified set of water restrictions the City Council approved on June 2. Alma Flores, Santa Ana communications director, explained that the city would be sending each water customer a letter outlining their water usage from the previous year. The letter would also note their target for water usage taking into account the 12 percent reduction.

This latest action by City Council brings Santa Ana under the auspices of a Level 2 Water Shortage. In February of 2014 the Santa Ana city code put into place a tiered system of possible water conservation. Level 1 which was enacted in September and featured voluntary restrictions; now, with the city under a Level 2 Water Shortage the conservation is mandatory.

Santa Ana has also adopted specific restrictions regarding when lawns can be watered, the use of fountains, filling swimming pool and washing cars. What has not been decided is how to warn and penalize those who do not follow the restrictions or who use more water than they are allowed.

Print companies could be of assistance in not only detailing the restrictions but also in providing information on the easiest ways to cut water usage.
