Santa Ana library expanding hours to include Sunday

The Santa Ana Main Library has decide to resume opening on Sundays after an indeterminate period of being open only six days a week.

Even the Santa Ana Librarians, who can usually find the answer to any query, are unsure how long it has been since the city’s main branch has opened on a Sunday. Their best guess is about 20 years.

Six years ago the library, due to the recession, went from a being a separate department to going under the jurisdiction of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency. It has had a few years of working on a shoestring budget and was nearly merged into the Orange County Public Library system in 2012.

However, the patience and the belt tightening have paid off and the city’s five-year strategic plan has enabled the library to increase both its hours and its e-library services.

Starting September 20, the main branch will open from noon to 4:00 pm on Sundays. The library has just about enough funds provided by the city, $83,000, to cover the costs of being open the extra hours for about a year.

The quality of a city’s library system is one of the many aspects of a town people consider when looking for a place to relocate, which is why libraries, with the assistance of local brochure printers, supply a wealth of information.
