Santa Ana hosts event to honor Black Music

A special early June event is kicking off an annual month of remembrance and celebration which puts a focus on the black community and the music they have brought and continue to bring into the world.

Black Music Month is a historic event, which started back in 1979 after Dyana Williams, Kenny Gamble, and Ed Wright were successful with a request to then US President Jimmy Carter.

The celebration puts a spotlight onto the massive financial and cultural impact of the music from black creators. Despite the earlier celebrations, it didn’t become officially legislated until 2000, after years of lobbying from Ms. Williams. With artists such as Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, The Temptations, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, black music has certainly cemented a place in popular culture and history.

Black Music Month Celebration is organized by the non-profit Cedar Tree Music and Performance. The event incorporates live performances of songs in genres such as hip-hop, chamber, jazz, R&B, and soul.

Guests can enjoy food from food trucks, as well as exhibitions they can interact with, and the nostalgic vibes of a roller skating rink. There is no cost to come and enjoy the festivities. Similar events are quite often advertised with several methods, including flyer printing. The Heritage Museum of Orange County will be the event’s location, with the timeframe being set for 10:00am-2:00pm. The date is June 1st.
