Orange County prepares for 2020 census

Residents of Orange County have started getting invites to participate in the 2020 census and hundreds of local schools and non-profits are helping people get ready.

The US Census Bureau and the local government are working hard to make sure that everyone knows about the census and that they know how important it is to participate. Flyer printing is one way of letting people know about important events in Santa Ana.

This will be the first time ever that the census questionnaire can be filled in online, as well as on paper or on the phone, in Orange County. The census workers are explaining how each option works and are educating people on how their personal information will be kept safe. A projects manager from Orange County named Saul Viramontes said:

“The census comes around every 10 years, and half the time the people don’t remember when the last one was or if they filled it out. Our job is to explain to those individuals, those communities, to let them know the census is safe, secure and it’s their civic duty.”

The information taken from the census is used to help the government distribute resources more efficiently. Officials use it to decide on how to disperse public funds that are used for schools, roads, and housing. Knowing exactly how many people in an area is important because an undercounted community would not receive its fair share of political representation or federal funding.

The official day for the census April 1, but workers will expect to be collecting data throughout April.
