San Leandro event to celebrate international holiday

An event in San Leandro in mid-March is giving locals a chance to learn about a holiday celebrated by many internationally.

Nowruz is Persia’s and Iran’s New Year celebration, and according to the United Nations website, the holiday “is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox.” This typically falls on March 21; however, it can occasionally shift by a day or two. It honors spring’s arrival, nature’s rebirth, and togetherness.

The tradition is 13 days long, with the equinox marking the starting point.

The Nowruz Dance Performance will feature talent from Shahrzad Dance Academy (SDA). Attendees will witness the SDA’s “symbols of love” routine, and will also have an opportunity to take part in another dance as well.

The Haftseen will also be covered at the event, as it is a big part of Nowruz. Haftseen is a table traditionally decorated with important symbols – these are typically seven in total, due to the luck associated with that number.

The event held at the San Leandro Main Library is free to attend. People of any age are welcome to enjoy the experience and indulge in the refreshments. Libraries tend to advertise with flyer printing when there’s an activity like this one scheduled.

The performance is set to take place a few days before the start of Nowruz, on March 14. It will run from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.
