Due to its moderate climate, Northridge gardeners can grow both food and ornamental crops all year round, and a workshop this weekend will help local home horticulturalists to release their inner green thumb.
The Northridge Campus of the California State University will be introducing species and cultivars that tend to perform well in local growing conditions. The session will be led by Steve List, who will share his many years of experience and explore ways to take advantage of the fall planting season.
Steve will begin at the ground at work his way up. He will explain how autumn planting can lead to a well-developed root system, and how important this is. Fruits, vegetables, and ornamental cultivars will all be in the mix. A variety of cultural practices that are suited to the local soil types and climate will be discussed, and attendees can ask questions.
To sign up for the activity, members of the public are asked to contact the organizers at botanicgarden@csun.edu, which must be done in advance. Stationery printers will be pleased to provide hard Copies of any materials to be distributed during a learning session like this.
This introduction to the challenges and joys of fall gardening will be held this Saturday, November 23. It will be offered at 18111 Nordhoff Street, and its start time is 2:00 pm.
