Cycads are a type of plant that has been around for millions of years. A Northridge workshop will explore these ancient plants and give tips for growing them in the home landscape.
The “Cycads: Living Fossils in the Garden” will provide an introduction to cycads. Though they look very much like a palm tree, they are not the same, and it is estimated that there are more than 300 species in the world today. Those who participate in the workshop will have an opportunity to find out about the advantages of incorporating them into a landscape design, discover what species grow best in the area and also how to care for and propagate them. This may be especially important as many species of cycads are endangered.
The class will be facilitated by Maurice Levin, who owns and operates Chatsworth’s Jurassic Garden Nursery. To help the attendees get to know these plants a bit better, he will be bringing several specimens along with him. The event is being offered on a free of charge basis, and anyone who is interested is welcome to attend the free class, though registration is required. A printing company will be able to supply simple care manuals for distribution to the students in a workshop like this.
