The California city of Placentia was recently home to a one-night appearance of Bollywood actress Poonam Dhillon, as she acted in the Hindi-language stage play ‘The Perfect Wife’.
It was an opportunity for Southern California's Indian diaspora to enjoy a taste of home and see a veteran actress in the flesh. The play took place on September 8 at the El Dorado Performing Arts Center.
The Perfect Wife is a comedic play that focuses on themes of gender roles and economic success. Dhillon plays Tina, a mother from the Indian city of Chandigarh, who wants to work at her husband's company now that her children are off to college. When husband Prakash does not take her seriously, Tina adopts the persona of her "sister" Lina, causing havoc in both the business and romantic life of her community.
Dhillon first rose to fame in 1979's Noorie, and also acted in Bollywood hits such as ‘Yeh Vada Raha’ and ‘Sohni Mahiwal’. She is credited with the idea for The Perfect Wife's plot, including the dual roles that allow her to showcase her acting skills. Plays such as this, which target a specific audience, often use processes like flyer printing or banner printing to get the word out.
The event was put together in part by Babu Patel of Tisha Entertainment, best known for hosting a long-running Bollywood-style dance competition.
