At present, smokers have to abstain from smoking in the major public buildings of Placentia. The recent vote could stop individuals from smoking within community centers, parking lots, parks, and outdoor plazas. However, more voting will be required for the wider ban to become a reality. Newsletter printing can be used to list the important decisions made by a wide range of organizations.
A planned Metrolink station could be affected by the move. The policy could also change the behavior of people in county-maintained Tri-City Park. There are some councilmembers who feel that the proposal might be slightly harsh on those who smoke, but the views of residents have been considered to be important. Council member Rhonda Shader told the Orange County Register:
“I hope it can be done respectfully on both sides. But we need some sort of rules for people to go by.”
Council member Craig Green voted for the restrictions on smoking and vaping, but did so with a pragmatic attitude. He suggested that the ban would only be enforced when non-smokers were in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, outvoted council member Chad Wanke expressed dissatisfaction with the measure. He objected to the blanket nature of the ban.
Enforcement of the new rules could cost approximately $1,500, as new Signs are likely to be needed.
