DoT gives $2 million grant to ANT

The United States Department of Transportation has given a $2 million grant to the Anaheim Transport Network (ATN) to help it develop technology that will serve as infrastructure for its fleet of electric buses.

The ATN specializes in offering shuttle services to people in local communities, such as Placentia, who wish to order bus rides to Disneyland and local airports.

Aiming to make the entire ATN fleet run on 100% zero-emission technology, the grant received from the DoT will go towards developing charging stations for electric buses so that the fleet is not affected by peak charging times.

The money for the grant came from the DoT’s ‘Low or No Emission’ program. The program’s goal is to help local and state governments reach their targets of reducing their emission and pollution rates and encouraging the adoption of cleaner technology. The money is mainly used for purchasing eco-friendly vehicles as well as for construction and maintenance of charging and refueling stations for zero-emission buses.

Eco-friendly buses tend to have ‘fully-electric’ printed on their exterior graphic design as a way to promote the use of zero-emission transport.

The ANT recently bought 40 fully-electric buses. They will start running in 2020 which means that 57% of ANT’s bus fleet will be running on zero-emission technology. The rest of its buses run on liquid natural gas. The entire fleet is expected to serve another 625,000 new bus riders by 2021.
