Tiki event in Long Beach

Tiki culture is popular throughout the country, and an event celebrating this quirky, South Pacific style is set for Long Beach.

The Long Beah Rum-Tiki Social is now on the calendar, the sixth time the event has been celebrated. This would have been the seventh year, except the pandemic forced cancelation of the 2020 party. The event brings together Tiki enthusiasts from throughout the area to party with live bands, Tiki vendors, and Tiki artists. Attendees will enjoy a welcome cocktail made with rum (or rhum or ron - the spelling varies), along with food, Tiki art from throughout Southern California, games, and live music.

The artists scheduled to play are the LA-based Tikiyaki Orchestra & Little Kahuna, and DJ Big Tiki Dude will be on hand to spin the music when the live acts take a break. Events like this are a perfect spot for attendees to exchange business cards.

Tiki is generally thought of as an interpretation of Polynesian culture that gained popularity in the 1930s to 1950s. American troops stationed in the Pacific feel in love with the Polynesian lifestyle and brought it home, where restaurants like Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic’s picked up on the theme, decorating with tiki torches, carved idols, tropical plants, and dark woods, and serving “exotic” drinks.

The Rum-Tiki Social is set for Roxanne’s Lounge on August 8, where the Exhibition Room will be converted into a Tiki VIP Lounge. The fun starts at noon. Passes are from $5 for designated drivers to $50 for VIPs.
