What's Happening in Long Beach, CA…

Prize-winning comedy coming to Long Beach

A show that salutes the crazy art form known as opera is coming to Long Beach.

“Lend Me a Tenor” was written by Ken Ludwig, and had its premiere in the West End in 1986, then transferred to Broadway in 1989, where it was nominated for nine Tonys, winning two. “Lend Me a Tenor” was revived on Broadway in 2010.

The plot is a variation on the “You're going out there an unknown, but you'll come back a star” theme of many classic films. In this case, the plot involves a celebrated Italian tenor who is supposed to perform at the Cleveland Grand Opera, only to wind up unconscious from a mistaken overdose of sleeping pills. The opera manager's assistant goes on in his place, and enjoys a huge success. After a madcap series of situations involving mistaken identity, as both men are now wearing the same costumes and makeup, the confusion is solved, and all ends happily.

A New York Times review of the show calls it a “clever farce,” adding:

“ . . . an audience’s suspension of disbelief is part of the fun.”

“Lend Me a Tenor” opens October 21, at 8:00 pm, at the Beverly O'Neill Theater at Long Beach Convention Center, and runs until November 8. Brochure printing can provide colorful programs for this type of performance.
