The grant program of the California State Parks Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has awarded the city of Lancaster over $2.4m to develop a new neighborhood park. This will add to the recreational green space needed on the west side of the city.
The new park will be built in the area next to the new southbound freeway ramp on 22nd Street West and Avenue J. Among the features of the park will be a pedestrian trail with benches and lighting, a shaded playground, exercise equipment, a shaded picnic area, a demonstration garden built to cope with drought, a fence around the perimeter, and landscaping. This grant program is highly competitive, and Lancaster was one of 16 municipalities to be awarded funding. The program provides funds to cities, counties, and other eligible districts and state agencies in California to create recreational resources outdoors. This application cycle awarded a total amount of $35.6m. A 50% match is required by the grant, meaning Lancaster will need to find additional funding through other grants.
According to a City of Lancaster press release, the new park is designed to foster well-being and engagement in the community and reflects the dedication of the city to creating enjoyable outdoor spaces for its residents.
