Solena Group in Lancaster is working with the city to build a facility that would be used by the city for its recyclables.
The company uses plasma heating technology able to disintegrate paper recyclables at temperatures as high as 7,000°F. This process produces hydrogen inexpensively and does not generate gases that contribute to warming the planet. It is hoped that this cleaner fuel can someday replace gas and oil for heating and transportation.
R. Rex Parris, Mayor of Lancaster, is trying to expedite the permitting process for the company to build its facility. He said that if the plant is built, the company would be one of the first to use a technology that would cut emissions. A small part of the company would be owned by the city.
Parris expressed his excitement in seeing the outcome of this new plant and is hoping other such facilities can be built across the country. Such potential successes can be made known throughout the country using printing services.
Robert Do, chief executive officer at Solena, said he has been working on this waste-to-fuel technology for many years. He co-founded the company with Salvador Camacho, an engineer formerly with NASA, in the 1980s. Camacho helped the agency to develop a plasma-heating technology that would able to test the heat shields used by spacecrafts as they reenter the earth’s atmosphere.
