Flame of Hope routes goes through Lancaster

On its way to Los Angeles, the 2015 Special Olympics World Games’ official torch made its way through Lancaster after first stopping in Palmdale.

On Friday, July 17, the Flame of Hope was escorted by Special Olympic athletes, as well as law enforcement officers serving in the capacity of ‘Guardians of the Flame of Hope’. The procession started at Summerwind Elementary and continued on to the Antelope Valley Mall where a brief ceremony was held. Then, it was on to Lancaster.

The Guardians escorted the torch, as its bearer held it aloft while running from the University of Antelope Valley to American Heroes Park in Lancaster. Once in the park, another brief ceremony was held and the significance of the Flame of Hope, and the special relevance it has to these particular games, was explained.

Fundraising for the Special Olympics takes on many forms, and almost always involves the services of a printing company to spread the word about events, as well as the good accomplished by the Special Olympics.

Palmdale and Lancaster are just two of the more than 120 communities throughout California that the Torch visited in route to its ultimate destination of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. There, it lit the flame to begin the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games on July 25.
