The changing faces of Huntington
Originally occupied by the indigenous Tongva people, the area was revealed to Europe by a Spaniard, Manuel Nieto, who – in 1784 – received a large land grant to develop the Rancho Los Nietos. Huntington’s main thoroughfare, Beach Boulevard, was the cattle-driving route for the ranch. As time went on, the town was given a number of names, including Gospel Swamp, reflecting the Revivalist meetings that were held here. As tourism began to take over from agriculture it was renamed Pacific City, before being renamed again in the late 1880s – this time, after railroad tycoon Henry Huntington.
Huntington Beach became a Charter City in 1909. Shortly after this, oil was found in the area thanks to an encyclopaedia company giving away free pockets of land. Today, the wells are mainly dry or shut down, although oil still provides some income to the area in the form of refinery pipelines and off-shore terminals. Other industrial sites include a major Boeing site, and the Cambro manufacturing plant.

Huntington Beach opened its first surf shack in 1956, but in recent years leisure and tourism have been increasingly important to the economy. A number of hotels have sprung up along the Pacific Coast Highway, and there are plans to make Main Street – the zesty city hub, packed with restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues – a pedestrian-only zone.
Huntington Beach has some of the best surfing beaches in the country, so it is hardly surprising it is packed with surf shops and beachfront boutiques, selling boards, wet suits, flip-flops, goggles, and even lessons. The lively beach vibe is carried into the bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, with regular ‘Surf City Nights’. These include a farmers’ market, live entertainment, kids’ activities, and food sampling. There is also an annual Taste of Huntington Beach festival – one of many. Other popular spots include Pier Plaza and trendy Downtown.
Away from the city there are endless tranquil, natural areas rich in plant and animal life. Places like the Bolsa Chica Wetlands and Shipley Nature Center are encouraging a welcome trend towards ecotourism.
