It will soon be time to clean up the beach for the summer, and the Surfrider Foundation has an event scheduled for Huntington Beach.
The Surfrider Beach Cleanup will take place at Huntington State Beach at Magnolia Street and the Pacific Coast Highway. The event is free, and an easy way to get some exercise, enjoy the beach, and help protect the environment. Hand sanitizer and Bags will be provided by Surfrider.
Everyone is welcome to take part in the effort, from individuals to large groups such as companies, school clubs, and Boy and Girl Scouts, although anyone under 12 should have an adult or guardian accompany them. Volunteers should bring some kind of sunscreen, sturdy gloves, and a reusable canteen or bottle. Surfrider will be providing the bags to hold debris.
Once the trash is collected, it is returned to the Surfrider tent. There, it will be weighed and sorted, and recyclables separated. The event counts toward community service hours as well. Anyone who wants such hours should ask a Surfrider member for a community service form at the time their trash is weighed.
The cleanup is set for July 11, from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm. Parking is free, though it is necessary to receive a parking pass; all a volunteer needs to do is mention “cleanup” to the person on the gate.
