Brats and wiener dogs in Huntington Beach

A fun event is coming up that residents of Huntington Beach enjoy, as do their four-legged friends.

Old World Huntington Beach, an authentic German restaurant, will host its annual Plum Festival soon, and as part of the day's activities, Wiener Dachshund Dog Races are scheduled. The low-to-the-ground pooches are sure to bring smiles to spectators' faces.

Old World's owners originated the Plum Festival in 1995, in honor of Elly Schwarzer, their grandmother, who baked her scrumptious plum cake (“Pflaumenkuchen” in German) for their mother's birthday, which was in August. The plums used in the cake also ripen in August, and the idea for a celebration was born. During the Plum Festival, Old World Huntington Beach serves plum crepes, plum cakes, and Berliners, plus there is face painting, carnival games, live music, and of course, the dog races.

The Wiener Dog Race became popular thanks to a commercial for Miller Lite Beer focusing on odd sports. Inge McKellop, who owns a Dachshund specialty shop in Old World Village, began the event. At first the dogs ran through the streets of the village, but today they run a straight, 22-yard-long course on the Old World Patio. This gives observers a better look at the race.

The annual Plum Festival will be held from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm on August 23. The Wiener dogs will race from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts to publicize this type of event.
