Dublin adds new character to July 4th parade

Dublin's annual Independence Day parade will have a new character joining in the fun.

Abby Cadabby, a winged, purple-haired, fairly-like Muppet from Sesame Street, will join the celebration as an inflatable. Abby joins Freddie the Firecracker, another inflatable, who is in his eighth parade.

The fun starts at 9:30 am at the ‘Inflation Celebration’,” where people can watch the parade balloons being filled. The event is scheduled for Metro Center's Graeter's Ice Cream shop.

Mary Jo DiSalvo, the city's events administrator, said this year marks the first time the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ will be played at the beginning of the parade. Di Salvo said officials wanted to make the anthem part of the official start of the parade. The lead marching band this year is from Dublin Jerome High School, which will march with the Dublin Honor Guard in front the VIP grandstand to start the festivities.

Among the entries in the parade are a number of floats, exploring the theme ‘Punk, Funk and Fireworks’. Also in the event is the bike brigade, an event for children from ages six to thirteen who decorate their bicycles and join the parade.

The parade gets underway tomorrow, July 4, at 11:00 am at the Metro Center.

Events like these can benefit from working with banner printing companies, which can create flags and Banners to add to the fun of these celebrations.
